When I arrived in Roanoke to become the anchor at WSLS I was still trying to figure out a new city and a new schedule. My family had not yet joined me from Richmond, and I was living in the Patrick Henry Hotel. It didn’t take long to find the chili at the Texas Tavern. What a treat and less than two blocks from the TV station! There were many, many nights when after the 6 p.m. news, I would walk down to the Tavern and get a bowl to go. I would then return to the station to begin writing the 11 p.m. news — on a typewriter. To this day, when I eat TT Chili, I am reminded of of my first months in Roanoke, in 1987.
